CISAC 2024 General Assembly meets in Seoul
27 May 2024 – The global community of creators’ rights management organisations gathers in Seoul on 30th May for the General Assembly of CISAC.
The meeting, to be hosted by the music authors’ society Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) will draw CEOs, creators and staff from more than 72 societies and collective management organisations, representing all regions and repertoires of the world.
CISAC is the world's largest network in the creative sector, incorporating 225 member collective management organisations (CMOs) in 116 countries. Together, this global network represents more than 5 million creators in music, visual arts, literature, drama, and the audiovisual sector.
The assembly coincides with the 60th anniversary celebrations of KOMCA, one of CISAC’s leading and fastest-growing member societies. KOMCA holds a seat on the CISAC Board and has an important influence on CISAC’s global agenda.
Topping the agenda in the 2024 assembly will be artificial intelligence (AI), its impact on the future livelihoods of creators and how the creative sector and governments should respond. Discussions will focus on CISAC’s work to shape copyright frameworks in order to safeguard creators so that AI tools can serve, and not substitute, human creativity.
A special panel on ‘Culture Crossing Borders’ will also look at the phenomenal success of Korean music and film, and the learnings they provide for the international creative community.
Creators speaking and joining panel discussions include: CISAC Vice-Presidents Ángeles González-Sinde Reig, Kazuhiko Fukuoji and Arturo Márquez, SM Entertainment founder and “President of Culture” Lee Soo Man, film director You Ji Tae and songwriter and President of APRA, Jenny Morris.
The assembly will also discuss the progress and future direction for CISAC’s technology services and advocacy priorities in support of its members worldwide.
CISAC Director General Gadi Oron says: “I’m delighted that this year’s CISAC’s General Assembly will be in South Korea, one of the most successful and dynamic markets for the creative sector. KOMCA has been at the heart of that success, helping export Korean culture globally and generating increased royalties for creators at home and internationally. The CISAC community will share in KOMCA’s celebrations of its 60 years of service to creators”.
KOMCA Chairman Chu Ga Yeoul said "We are delighted to host the 2024 CISAC General Assembly in Seoul and extend a heartfelt welcome to CMOs from around the globe. Although the Korean music market has undergone rapid development and the influence of K-pop continues to proliferate worldwide, it is true that there are still areas in copyright law and the system that require improvement to safeguard the rights of music creators.
I hope this CISAC General Assembly will serve as a pivotal occasion for deliberating on what is necessary to protect the rights and interests of creators not only in Korea but globally, and to illuminate a promising future for them”.
CISAC Board Chair, Marcelo Castello Branco says: “This CISAC General Assembly, hosted by KOMCA, comes at a time of extraordinary challenges for our global network: the rise of AI, the reform of our business systems, and the threats to creators’ rights that we face from so many quarters. But the CISAC GA is also a unique and valuable meeting point, where we listen to the creators we serve, learn from our colleagues and express the solidarity of our global community”.
