Societies in Africa continue to make significant progress in collections through training workshops and seminars organised by CISAC and the CISAC Regional Director for Africa Samuel Sangwa. In Kigali, CISAC held a four-day extensive training seminar on 21-24 July, covering a variety of business practices for 26 French and English-speaking societies. By participating in the seminar, African collective management societies are ensuring their ability to improve the collections environment for the region’s creators.

CISAC Membership Manager Miriam Orozco conducted the training. CISAC’s Governance Tools, which include a range of resources that allow collective management organisations to share knowledge and be transparent with one another, were reviewed including the Governance Portal, Professional Rules, Income & Expenditures and distributions. Incomes & Expenditures particularly assist in reporting collections to identify growth as well as areas of improvement.

Increasing financial reporting among societies is also a primary objective of the session on audited financial statements and annual reports. Providing accurate, consistent reports have been a cornerstone of the region’s development strategy to allow measurement of the creative sector’s health.

The workshop also presented and responded to questions regarding distribution methods and rules. Certain societies are beginning to receive collections from new sources, and CISAC is providing those societies and others support to properly do so on behalf of the creators they are entrusted to represent.

The training session was held around the CISAC Regional African Committee meeting, hosted by member society RSAU with the participation of the following societies: BBDA, BGDA, BUBEDRA, BURIDA, BMDA, BUMDA, BUTODRA, CAPASSO, CMC, COSOMA, COSON, DALRO, IPRS, MASA-RMS, MCSN, NASCAM, ODDA, OMDA, OTPDA, RSAU, SACS, SODAV, ZIMURA.
