CISAC Regional European Committee draws collective management experts to Moscow

Approximately 100 professionals from throughout Europe and abroad gathered for the 2017 Regional European Committee meeting, held in Moscow on 5-6 April and hosted by local society RAO. The regional committee was successfully hosted by the Russian society only three months following new changes to its management. The meeting gave the opportunity for participants to become familiarised with the initiated process and transformations of RAO into a modern, transparent society working more closely with fellow Russian societies RUR, UPRAVIS and VOIS.

The event was opened by the Russian Ministry of Education Science and Technology Department Director Sergej Matveev, who detailed building legal culture and legislation in Russia for intellectual property management in the digital environment.

The two-day conference passed resolutions calling for support of Ukrainian authorities to take action against television and radio broadcasters to pay royalties as well as calling for the Polish government to introduce the unwaivable remuneration right for the online use of audiovisual works in the country. 

Among discussions regarding the implications of blockchain technology and artificial intelligence, the business value of social and cultural deductions as well as European Court of Justice decisions, the European Committee gave the chance for participants to receive updates on the latest in the ongoing transfer of value campaign, the Audioviusal Campaign and additional EU copyright developments. BMI Senior Vice President of Global Policy Ann Sweeney was on hand to present on developments in music copyright and collective management in the United States. Mail.ru Group’s Dmitry Sergeev discussed social media platform VKontakte’s business model and challenges to copyright licencing.
