On 10-11 May, the CISAC Regional Asia-Pacific Committee (APC) met in Seoul, putting authors’ rights and protections in Asia-Pacific at centre stage. Some 40 representatives from 20 societies joined the meeting, hosted by KOMCA, to discuss business issues in the region.

JASRAC General Affairs Bureau Senior Administrator and APC Chairman Satoshi Watanabe welcomed participants. CISAC Director General Gadi Oron outlined CISAC’s global priorities, highlighting as a priority the international campaign to address the transfer of value.

The meeting was opened by the election of CISAC Asia-Pacific Committee Vice-Chairman for the May 2017-November 2019 term. You Giseob, Secretary General of KOMCA, was unanimously elected.

After a review of matters related to the previous meeting, including business issues such as broadcast licensing, cinema licensing, and karaoke licensing, issues specific to the region were discussed.  This included the lobbying campaign to remove restrictions on public performance collections in Korea as well as updates on IPRS, the transfer of value and online licensing. Satoshi Watanabe and Benjamin Ng also gave developments on the Asia-Pacific Music Creators Alliance (APMA), which was launched late last year during the World Creators Forum in Beijing.

The second day was devoted to country-by-country question and answer sessions. This gave each country the opportunity to highlight collective management concerns and developments.
