On 30 August, the “Pepe Sanchez Act” successfully passed the second debate in the House of Representatives of the Congress of Colombia. Representative Clara Rojas announced the momentous news, as reported by the Board of CISAC member society DASC.

The bill will now go before the Senate, where it will have to pass two more debates before receiving a final approval. If approved, the “Pepe Sanchez Act” would recognise the rights of screenwriters and directors in Colombia to receive an equitable share in the success of their work for the first time ever. It would bestow the right to remuneration for screenwriters and directors from the public broadcast of their works, which has similarly been enacted in France, Spain and India.

The campaign started as an initiative of DASC, being joined soon after by the Colombian screenwriters’ society REDES. The act is named after the award-winning Colombian writer and director.

DASC would like to deeply thank Representative Clara Rojas for her support for the “Pepe Sanchez Act”.
