In a unanimous 11-0 vote on 28 March, the draft “Pepe Sanchez Act” passed the First Commission of the Senate in Colombia. Within 15 days, it will be discussed at a plenary session of Congress. This is the last step before promulgation by the President.

If approved, the “Pepe Sanchez Act” would recognise the rights of screenwriters and directors in Colombia to receive an equitable share in the success of their works. This right to remuneration has already been enacted in France, Spain and India.

This marks a new achievement by the initiative of DASC, which was joined shortly after by screenwriters’ society REDES. The act is named after the award-winning writer and director Pepe Sanchez, who passed away in December 2016.
