In Memory of Joel Shapiro – A renowned sculptor and visionary for creators’ rights

CISAC is saddened to learn of the passing of Joel Shapiro, a distinguished sculptor and influential advocate for the global visual arts community.

Joel Shapiro served as President of CIAGP, CISAC’s visual artists committee, where he championed the rights of creators and helped guide global efforts to strengthen copyright protections for visual artists. He also served on the Board of the Artists Rights Society (ARS) in New York, further amplifying his impact as a leader in collective rights management.

From his artistic contributions to his thoughtful leadership at international gatherings and in organisations committed to artists’ rights, Joel Shapiro’s influence was significant and enduring. We honour his legacy and extend our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and all who were fortunate to work alongside him as we were.
