Jonathan Carter of APRA AMCOS Elected Chair of CISAC Legal & Policy Committee
Jonathan Carter, Chief Operating Officer of APRA AMCOS, has been elected as Chair of the CISAC Legal & Policy Committee, one of the key bodies within the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC).
The Legal & Policy Committee plays a central role in guiding CISAC’s legal and policy work, including oversight of international litigation, legal reviews, and cooperation with partner institutions on copyright matters. Its activities cover all aspects of global copyright policy, from legislative developments to emerging digital challenges.
Jonathan’s appointment marks the start of a new leadership cycle, following six years under the direction of Caroline Bonin (SACEM) as Chair and Juan Carlos Coronado (UBC) as Vice-Chair. The Committee will now be co-led by Jonathan Carter, representing the Australian copyright society APRA AMCOS, and Stephany Balao, representing the Mexican authors’ society SACM.
The transition was formally celebrated this week in Seoul, South Korea, during the CISAC Legal Committee meeting hosted by the Korean copyright society KOMCA. Discussions focused on the copyright implications of generative AI and other pressing international legal and policy issues.
“I am excited by the challenge of this new role and hope to build on the excellent work of the outgoing Chair to ensure the future success and relevance of this Committee,” Jonathan said.
CISAC warmly congratulates Jonathan Carter and Stephany Balao on their appointments and thanks Caroline Bonin and Juan Carlos Coronado for their exceptional leadership. Together, the new Committee will continue to strengthen global cooperation in defending creators’ rights amid technological disruption.
