On 17 January, European Parliament MEPs passed a resolution calling for EU rules to ensure a fair and sustainable music streaming sector for creators, and to promote cultural diversity. The resolution seeks to address an imbalanced music streaming market that leaves the majority of authors and performers with little to no compensation while also leaving less common languages and music genres at a disadvantage.

CISAC, its sister organisations in Europe and its member societies have long highlighted inequalities for creators trying to make a livelihood and profession in the streaming market. The Resolution agreed by MEPs focuses on key issues that need attention:

  • Fair pay for authors
  • Visibility of European works
  • Transparency of AI tools
  • Support for musical diversity

The resolution calls for “a new EU legal framework for the sector, for which currently no European rules apply, even though streaming services are the main way that people access music”.
