Representing over 4 million creators from all geographic areas and artistic repertoires through its 239 member societies in 123 countries, CISAC promotes the rights of creators worldwide, facilitates revenue collections, provides data and legal expertise and sets best practice standards for its member societies globally. FutureLearn is a MOOC platform offering online education globally.

The course, which was created, written and produced by former CISAC Vice-Chairperson Marisa Gandelman, is open for all those interested in learning more about copyright and its history from the Renaissance to today.

The MOOC examines:

  • How the idea that artistic work is the property of creators spawned an industry based on copyright
  • How that industry has contributed to domestic and global economic growth
  • How the exchange of knowledge and ideas about authors and their rights became global, leading to  international law for the protection of intellectual work.
  • How the World Wars and 20th century technologies affected the exchange of knowledge and technology regulated by the international conventions of the late 19th century.
  • How digital technology has presented new opportunities and challenges in protecting copyright works and productions
