CISAC and international organisations hail Copyright Act vote by Czech Republic

CISAC has welcomed the decision by the Czech Republic Chamber of Deputies to reject an amendment to the country’s copyright law that would have set back fair remuneration for creators and rightsholders. The rejection came after a joint submission opposing the measure by ICMP, CISAC, GESAC, IFPI, IMPALA, and other international rights holder representative organisations.

The amendment would have deprived rightsholders of fair remuneration for the use of music in public performances. It would have extended the licensing exemption to broadcast performance in public premises. The amendment was introduced during the process of transposing the Marrakesh Treaty into Czech law.

International organisations argued that the amendment did not effectively transpose the Treaty and would have put Czech Republic in breach of its obligations to international copyright treaties and European Union law.
